Save Sag Harbor was founded in 2007 when a group of concerned citizens banded together in opposition to the proposed arrival of a big box retailer on Main Street. We galvanized the community, raised funds for lawyers and consultants, and worked with our elected officials to change the Village code and set limits on the allowable size of retail footprints.

Since then, our all-volunteer board has led efforts to strengthen and support the enforcement of Sag Harbor’s commercial and residential zoning codes, to engage designers, architects, consultants, and legal counsel to evaluate challenges to those codes, and to reach out to the community through newsletters, events, panel discussions, and publications to explain the impact zoning changes may have on the unique charm of a historic village loved by residents and visitors from around the world.

Save Sag Harbor is the only independent, community-supported, not-for-profit 501(c)4 organization to advocate for the protection of the historic designation, character, scale, and quality of life of our village. We have consistently undertaken civic and educational initiatives intended to protect and promote our historic village, such as:

  • Hosting seminars, lectures, and Town Hall-style meetings at which Sag Harbor residents, elected and appointed officials, and business, environmental, and cultural leaders gather to discuss issues and programs relating to historic preservation, village infrastructure, environmental sustainability, comprehensive planning, affordable housing, parking solutions, clean transportation, safe streets, etc.;

  • Conducting marketing and public relations campaigns dedicated to promoting the health of Sag Harbor’s commercial district by encouraging residents and visitors to “shop locally;”

  • Sponsoring “Meet the Candidate” sessions and “Get Out the Vote” reminders intended to encourage informed decision-making about and participation in local, regional, state, and national elections;

  • Sharing facts obtained from Sag Harbor Village board meetings, other volunteer community organizations on the East End of Long Island, comparable villages nationwide, and state and federal agencies that pertain specifically to the safe-keeping of our historic village and to the preservation of the quality of life its residents enjoy.
